florida has it rigged!

i'm so dissapointed! in both florida's games this weekend, it's been a ref's dream to call and foul out their opponents! Malik Hariston from Oregon's 5th to foul out was the most flagrant!
I especially loved how during the replay which had the supposed foul off screen, the announcers were explaining how clearly you could see the foul, even though the shot was invisible.

of course if porter (Oregon) had been hitting his 3's like friday, it would have been lights out for the gators.

slightly bitter, but there are too many questionable calls in florida's favor to believe it was all fair.
crap!

OSU vs. Florida

OSU is only going to get better, but when Florida's focused, they are so tough to beat. Florida won this round, but another meeting come March will be a titanic struggle, definitely a must see. Also caught some of Kansas wiping out BC today, the Jayhawks looked pretty tough.

Knight goes for the record

From Pat Forde's ESPN.com column today. Ouch:

"Bob Knight is closing in on victories that will be historic in scope but pyrrhic in nature.

To understand the pyrrhic part, you need to know about "Project 880" at Texas Tech.

Knight, who is now tied with Dean Smith at 879 victories, likely will become the winningest coach in Division I men's college basketball annals during the Red Raiders' ongoing four-game home stand. In hope that people actually will show up to see Knight enter the record books, Tech has been offering $8.80 general admission seats to the four games at United Spirit Arena. And if you buy a lower-level ticket to those games, you can get one upper-level general admission seat for free.

It's not an easy sell. Texas Tech averaged 6,707 fans in its 15,000-seat arena for four of its early home games this season (attendance for Sam Houston State was not listed) before pulling in 11,561 for the record-tying game against Bucknell this past Saturday.

This is the bed Bob Knight made for himself: He'll make history at an out-of-the-way school with no men's basketball heritage in a football state, in front of a house that very well could be less than full. He'll make history in exile, in effect.

Not exactly the moment of glory this could have been."

I just recently moved to Northern California and so my on line interaction has slowed down a bit as I get adjusted. I haven't been able to post the weekly polls but if someone wants to post them while I take care of business feel free to. You can get them at Yahoo or ESPN easily. I'd like to see both Men's and Women's weekly polls posted. Go Bruins!!!

UConn's Auriemma hospitalized

By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer
April 13, 2006

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma was hospitalized Thursday for what the university called a minor condition and is expected to be released this weekend.

The school said the 52-year-old coach was at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford but would not elaborate.

However, the ailment was described as a non-life threatening intestinal infection by someone familiar with the coach's health, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of privacy reasons. The hospital referred all calls about Auriemma to the university.

Auriemma was elected this month into the Basketball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He will be inducted into the women's Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn., this month.

Since arriving at Connecticut 21 years ago, Auriemma has transformed the Huskies from a small regional program to a national power with five NCAA titles. Their five straight trips to the Final Four from 2000-04 is a record.

Auriemma, a five-time national coach of the year, led UConn to a Division I winning streak of 70 games from 2001-03. The Huskies finished this season 32-5, losing in the NCAA regional finals to Duke.

Army women's basketball coach dead at 28

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) -- A month ago, 28-year-old Army coach Maggie Dixon left the Christl Arena court on the shoulders of jubilant cadets after leading the women's basketball team to its first NCAA tournament berth.

On Friday, Dixon was mourned in a chapel across the U.S. Military Academy's campus, a day after she died following a sudden episode of irregular heartbeat.

Dixon died Thursday night at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., academy spokesman Lt. Col. Kent Cassella said.

An autopsy conducted Friday found that Dixon had an enlarged heart and a problem with a heart valve, according to the Westchester County Medical Examiner's office. The valve problem could have caused her heart to beat irregularly and ultimately stop.

About 500 people filled the Catholic Chapel, including her family and players who remembered her as equal parts coach, big sister and best friend. On the cover of the memorial service program was a picture of a beaming Dixon, her left index finger jabbing skyward as she was carried off the court following the historic win.

Those who spoke universally recalled Dixon's exuberance, humor and the guidance she offered when things weren't going well.

"Adversity, ladies. How are you going to react?" guard Adrienne Payne said in remembering one of Dixon's challenges to her team.

Cadets, who made up about three-quarters of the crowd, were excused from classes to attend. It was somber and stoic, with few tears and some laughter mixed in. In front of the altar was a basketball, the Patriot League trophy they won last month and a photo of the team.

Dixon was hospitalized Wednesday in critical condition after collapsing at a friend's house, where she had gone for afternoon tea, her older brother, Pittsburgh men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon said.

"Maggie touched so many people beyond basketball," he said in a subsequent statement released Friday by Pitt. "Our family has received an outpouring of sympathy from across the country and we are deeply appreciative. ... I know she looked up to me. But I always looked up to her, too, and it's obvious that a lot of other people did as well."

He said he had breakfast with his sister on the morning she collapsed and that she had apparently been feeling well.

Dixon's time at Army was short but significant.

She arrived at the storied military academy on the banks of the Hudson River in October, just 11 days before the start of the season and inherited a team that had gone 74-70 over the previous five seasons. The team struggled at the beginning, before winning nine of its last 11 games.

Just six months after Dixon took over, the 69-68 win over Holy Cross in the Patriot League final put Army into the NCAA tournament for the first time. The rookie coach's accomplishment earned extra acclaim because her brother had taken Pitt to the men's tournament at the same time. The Dixons are believed to be the first brother and sister to coach in the NCAA tournament in the same year.

"I believe she was having dreams of grandeur that we'd dunk on Tennessee," forward Ashley Magnani said.

And, despite a 102-54 first-round loss to the Volunteers, things were looking up for the Black Knights.

"I just loved the energy that coach brought to practice every day and the way she never gave up on us, always believed in us," guard Cara Enright said. "She would tell us to 'Use what you've learned here at the academy and apply it to basketball."'

Members of her team were with Dixon's family members at her bedside Thursday.

West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. William Lennox Jr. said the entire community was heartbroken by her death.

"From the time Maggie arrived here, her enthusiastic 'no limits' approach earned her the respect and love of everyone," he said.

The North Hollywood, Calif., native had hoped to play in the WNBA after graduating in 1999 from the University of San Diego. But the Los Angeles Sparks cut her after a tryout in May 2000. She went into coaching with encouragement from her brother.

"He said, `If you want to do this coaching thing, do something drastic,"' Dixon told The Associated Press last month. "That's what I did."

She held a number of positions under DePaul coach Doug Bruno after walking into his office and introducing herself. She eventually became his top assistant in May 2004.

The Army team was expected to fly to California next week for Dixon's funeral. Arrangements were incomplete.

Associated Press writer Michael Hill in Albany contributed to this report

Duke G Redick wins Wooden Award

Duke G Redick wins Wooden Award
Duke G Redick wins Wooden Award

April 8, 2006
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - It's only fitting that Duke's all-time leading scorer won the Wooden Award.

Guard J.J. Redick edged out Gonzaga's Adam Morrison for the Wooden Award, which was presented on Saturday at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

Named after legendary UCLA coach John R. Wooden, the honor is given annually to the nation's top men's basketball player.

Also the all-time leading scorer in Atlantic Coast Conference history, Redick won college basketball's other major Player of the Year honor - the Naismith Award - last week.

Redick becomes the fourth Blue Devil in eight years to win the Wooden Award, following Jason Williams (2002), Shane Battier (2001) and Elton Brand (1999).

Paired together all season in discussions of the nation's top player, Redick and Morrison led their teams to the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Morrison led the nation in scoring with a 28.1 average while Redick finished second at 26.8.

"Me and Adam are very competitive, but the important thing for us is winning ballgames and we did a great job of doing that this year," Redick said.

Redick's teammate Shelden Williams, Washington swingman Brandon Roy and Villanova guard Randy Foye were the other Wooden finalists. All are seniors with the exception of Morrison, who has a year of college eligibility left.

Behind Morrison, the Bulldogs rolled to a 29-3 record, winning 20 straight games before a late-game collapse against UCLA in the "Sweet 16."

The Blue Devils went 32-4 but fell to Louisiana State in the regional semifinals, leaving Redick without a national title in his stellar career.

Last year's winner was Utah center Andrew Bogut, who was selected first overall in the NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Forward Seimone Augustus of Louisiana State earned the women's Wooden Award for the second straight year.

The honor for Augustus comes three days after she was selected No. 1 overall in the WNBA draft by the Minnesota Lynx.

Augustus led the nation in scoring this season at 22.7 points per game as the Lady Tigers reached the Final Four for the second straight season.

Guards Cappie Pondexter of Rutgers and Monique Curry of Duke were among the women finalists.
In a weird quirk, NIT champion South Carolina beat NCAA champ Florida...

...twice this season, and almost beat them a third time in the SEC Tournament (the Gamecocks lost by a 49-47 count). Even back when only conference champions could qualify for the NCAA Tournament, I bet no NIT champ ever took two games from the NCAA champ. In the end, it meant that SEC basketball, despite being perceived as weak this year, is still pretty strong. Since the league expanded to 12 teams in the early 90's, five SEC schools have participated in at least one Final Four, with three of those schools (Arkansas, Kentucky and Florida) winning a championship.

I think everyone knows I was pulling for the Bruins but they came up short....one thing we haven't discussed much that's been on all the sports shows and discussions this year is "parity" I hadn't heard it as much as I have this season or maybe I just blocked it out because some of the talking heads blather on and on....any other thoughts about parity in ncaa basketball.,....who's your pick for the women's national champs??...I like Maryland...

Biggest first round upset for me was Northwestern State over Kentucky...

Alot of the announcers have been talking about parity this year it seems more than most...maybe there is something to it...and how about no Big Ten teams left in the tournament??

...happened a lot quicker if the refs hadn't made some weird calls down the stretch, I thought they were playing in Spokane for a second. And I think every ref west of the Mississippi has a somewhat laissez faire attitude toward Adam Morrison, because no big man since Walter Berry has spent more time clubbing off defenders with his non-dribbling hand while never getting it called. Gonzaga just doesn't have the horses to win six straight games in this sort of tournament. It's a shame, though, getting a mid-major into the Final Four would have been pretty cool.

San Diego NCAA arena evacuated in bomb scare

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police evacuated an arena hours before a first-round game in the national college basketball championship on Thursday when a bomb-sniffing dog signaled a possible problem at a hot dog stand.

Only a few people were in San Diego State University's Cox Arena when it was evacuated, said San Diego Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque.

The 12,000-seat arena was cleared while police tried to determine if there was an explosive device at the hot dog stand, said college spokesman Jack Beresford said.

"A bomb-sniffing dog noticed something in a hot dog cart," Beresford said. "They got a hit on something that was in the cart itself."

Players for Marquette University and the University of Alabama, whose game was scheduled at 11:40 a.m. PST (2:30 p.m. EST), had not arrived, Luque said.

He said the police bomb squad was using a remote-controlled robot to examine a suspicious package found on top of the cart during the routine sweep.

Four games were scheduled for the arena on Thursday in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, college basketball's marquee event.

...for way too long, I figured I would jump in for March Madness. To brush up:

http://www.collegeinsider.com/2006/

I wanna go with UConn, but they have a habit of playing down to the competition at times. I think a team like Michigan State could be a dark horse, but can they win three or four in a row against top competition? Will Gonzaga and Tennessee actually play defense in this tournament?

Duke vs UNC on the weekend! Who do you guys think will take this one. I know Duke is favored but UNC just beat UVA by thirty points and Duke just lost to the Gators in a nailbiter. I think the differences will be that if Reddick or Hansborough hit their shots. Also, DEFENCE. What happened to that old half court trap I saw worked so nicely with Rick Pitino's Kentucky team.

Need Advice: How to Get Final Four Tickets???

So me and my buddy really wanna go to the Final Four this year. I had the chance to go with friends a few years ago, but I passed it up. We saved up transportation and a cheap hotel room (if there are any), and will do whatever it takes to go, but ticket prices are ridiculous.

We're thinking about buying "FanTix" on FantasyTix.com. You buy FanTix for your favorite team (every team costs different money), and if they get into the Final Four, you get a ticket. We're die-hard Tar Heels fans, so we would probably buy two of those ($89 a piece), but if they don't get in, then we're out of luck. Roy Williams is gonna be cutting down the nets, and I wanna be there in person to witness. If they don't make it, I still wanna be there... I can't wait another year.

Anyone have any advice on FantasyTix.com or where I could get other tickets? I gotta make a decision soon.

The inspiring true story of the underdog Texas Western basketball team, with history's first all African American starting lineup of players, who took the country by storm, surprisingly winning the 1966 NCAA tournament title. Josh Lucas stars as Hall of Famer Don Haskins, the passionately dedicated college basketball coach that changed the history of basketball with his team's victory in this time of innocence.

This is along the lines of all the sports movies that have come out in the last few years or so. "Remember the Titans", "Miracle", and others....click on the link it takes you to yahoo and you can watch clips from the movie. It opened this past weekend and was the top grossing movie.

I went to Penn so I sometimes follow them, but I'm a West Coast guy so I most often keep up with the Pac-10, men's and women's, particularly UCLA, the Arizonas and Stanford.

Conference Tournaments

The Pac 10 was one of the last major conferences to play and end of the season tournaments. In fact it started the conference tournament and then abandoned it and went back to it in the 2002 Season....are they necessary? I know they bring alot of excitement to the game which I certainly enjoy and give a way for teams to gain momentum into the "Big Dance" but playing a team possibly for a 3rd time is a season and except for a lower seeded team that wouldn't make it into the national tournament it's hard to see why they happen besides of course the chance for the conferences to make more money. Anyone else have thoughts??

who will be good next year? I will go with the safe bet and say that UNC will be a mid-tourney team because they will lose at least five players(McCants last night stated that he will declare for the NBA draft). All of those players are more than just contributers.

I have heard that the Big 10 is the best basketball conference but this year the Tar Heels went 5-0 against them. All of the teams made the tourney or notched at least 10 conference wins. Let see here Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Illinois. And strangely enough the team that really gave UNC fits was the one they historically had problems with, the Hoosiers.

Championship Game - Illinois vs UNC

What's with all the calls in Illinois favor that are clearly wrong? Is there a rig in place? Makes me want to root for UNC.

They appear more talented at the moment...

Who thought the two number ones would blow past their opponents? I sure as hell didn't think so. I thought at least one of them would falter. But with Louisville unable to make lay ups in the second half and with Michigan State trying to play a style that favors UNC the number one and two teams romped. And where did UNC learn to play defense? They held the Spartans to under 33% shooting.

Who watched? I was really impressed with McRoberts. Also, Chamblers had a good show.

There was one other guy who looked just like Lebron only with a low profile. Name slips me at the moment.

Green was there, and had the highest score for the night, but I wasn't excited. He won the dunk contest which was very good.

UNC escaped barely. Villanova showed the biggest weakness of North Carolina defensively. For some reason in UNC's losses they had problems with the other "guard". Against Wake, it was Downey. Against Georgia Tech, it was Will Bynum. Against Duke, it was Nelson. Well against Santa Clara, we know what happened. Another thing, the travel by Allan Ray. "I" obviously thought it was a travel, but the Syracuse faithful sure disagreed. The entire game was poorly officiated. There were so many tick tack fouls. Like the three point play by Foye(i believe) with about a minute or so left where there was no contact. Anyway to be honest UNC winning without Raymond Felton in the end was promising.

Now to my big concern.
Where did Kentucky get these monsters?!!!! How did they get a guy that is basically Manute Bol with muscle, Alleyne. And the other guy, Obrzut, where did he come from? Where have these 7'0" 270+ monsters been?

I think almost all of the big name teams looked bad. If Illinois looked this bad against Fairleigh Dickinson; I am scared for my Tar Heels.

Alabama's 3-3 over its last six games and hasn't looked good on the offensive end in its last three. Wisconsin-Milwaukee might be a good candidate to upset them. Billy Donovan-coached teams haven't faired well in the NCAA's lately, with Manhattan getting Florida last year in a 5-12 game and Creighton doing the same in another 5-12 game in 2002. Florida is matched up with Ohio in this tourney in a 4-13 game, which might be trouble. The MAC was a tougher league than people gave it credit for, so look for Ohio to play tough.

Digger Phelps has picked his Final Four:

Illinois
Wake Forest
Duke
Florida

I have no problems with him picking the Illini as champs, but stating that Florida will make it to the Final Four is basically a slap in the face of three great teams:UNC, Kansas, and UConn. Hopefully, UNC will not need any real motivation to knock of a team like Florida.

The Big East barring a miracle in their Tourney will have only five teams going to Big Dance. As for the ACC, probably five as well. The SEC will get only five. But the Big 12 looks to have six teams. Depending on how well Iowa State does in the conference tourney; the conference with the most tourney teams may be the Big 12.

Depending how bad things are, UNC's Rashad McCants might be gone for the next couple of games. Hopefully he is just being pussy and all he has is an irritable colon.

is Illinois as good as their record indicates?

They kindof reminds me of St. Joes of last year. The Big Ten seems really weak, plus the Illini have played three teams that were supposed to be decent this year that are missing their best players. Every b-ball analyst has been commenting on the weakness of the SEC; yet it is ironic that the SEC's conference RPI is just ahead of the Big-Ten. The Big 10 seems to have three potential NCAA teams. I am not saying that Illinois is a bad season. What I am saying is that it seems like the Big 10 seems to me this year they are the MAC conference. I know that is a bit harsh. As for Illinois, I think the rest of the potential National Title contenders seem a bit inept. Kansas has lost against Texas Tech and Iowa State in a span of a week. Wake Forest either looks unstoppable like against UNC and Duke or they look like they are learning to play basketball for the first like their first meeting against Florida State and Illinois. UNC has looked good but have problems excuting and they also have problem not tripping over each other.(not be biased I know UNC can school Illinois at home or at a neutral setting).
That brings me to another point. Illinois lacks a bench especially up front. I think Augustine is a good player, but I think everyone else is incredibly worthless. Nick Smith makes Greg Dreiling look like Wilt Chamberlain. And while Roger Powell is good against the smaller Big Ten foes; he would be stopped completely against a teams such as Boston College and UConn. The backcourt is great but outside of Iowa I haven't seen them play against another group that can defensively frustrate them(Wake Forest is still bad on defense folks).
Now for my big shock. Who am I afraid will win the NCAA title? Kentucky. This team reminds me of the 1997-98 team. This team has a good mixture old and new talent. Sure there are claims that this team is very young, but I can assure you their overall talent is better than that of the Syracuse championship team. This could all change if UNC stops running into each other.

For those of you who didn't catch the UK vs. Tennessee game a couple weeks back, you may have missed this Rick Majerus quote. ESPN did a good job keeping it on the down low.

_______________________________________
ESPN college basketball analyst Rick Majerus, on a Kentucky-Tennessee game last week, said he hoped to get a glimpse of Ashley Judd, an actress and Kentucky fan, so he wouldn't "have to watch adult videos back at the hotel."

Said ESPN's Mike Soltys on Sunday, "We recognize it was inappropriate, as does Rick, and we apologize."

...Jeff Lebo. The first year Auburn coach is working with an undersized lineup that only goes six deep, and he's still got the team at 11-10 following today's 90-76 whipping of Mississippi State. Lebo has already inked a solid recruiting class, so look for his name to pop up for some high profile job openings in seasons to come.

UNC played like ass......

Either that or Wake Forest is truly the best team in college ball. UNC was saddled with major foul trouble. McCants missed half of the second half and that helped create an insurmountable deficit. Felton shot like Allen Iverson. He scored 16 points on 5 of 18 shooting. Combine that with some of the dumbest passes I have seen all year, and you can see this UNC wasn't the team that beat Georgia Tech. Or were they? Wake Forest made all 32 of their free throws in a foul happy game. Today May reminded me of Kenyon Martin. He is good against smaller players he can bully against but versus opponents his size or larger he disappears. At the end it looked a like a layup drill for Wake Forest. While there is nothing wrong with losing against a team as good as Wake; there is something wrong when you simply give them the first 32 minutes. To Wake's credit, they didn't look at all like the team that was beaten into submission by Illinois. After today they have proven they deserve to be the number two team in the nation. They say you can learn more from defeat then victory. If that is the case I hope Roy can teach them how they goofed up in this game.

I don't think they are flop. I mean they beat both Louisville and Texas. I just think they need to play more as a team. The last two games they played like UNC did last year. Pierre Pierce is playing very selfishly and is not worrying about his shot selection as much as he should.

It may have slipped under the radar because of the late start of the game over the weekend (midnight on Saturday), but Gonzaga really laid it on Georgia Tech:

In a game that might eventually have ramifications on seeding in the West Region for the NCAA Tournament, Gonzaga beat Washington 99-87 in Seattle last night. Both of these teams have tough games against ACC squads coming up the weekend of the 18th, with Gonzaga playing Georgia Tech in Las Vegas and Washington hosting NC State in the return game of a home-and-home.

Gonzaga's game with Tech starts a brutal three game stretch for them. After Tech, the Bulldogs travel to Oklahoma State on the 28th and to Missouri on the 30th. If they win two of those, and then run the table in the WCC, they could be the number one seed in the West. Washington will also be in that mix, that team is looking tough and with the Pac-10 being down (Stanford is 2-3, UCLA is not all the way back, and Arizona had an 18 point loss to Virginia), the Huskies might be the class of the conference. If they get a nice run, who knows, they might be in the mix for the top seed in the West. This is, of course, contingent on a team from outside the region not being shipped in and placed at the top.

After that ugly Felton-less loss to Santa Clara to start the season, the Tar Heels are looking lean and mean. They won the Maui Invitational by an average of 21 a game, then flew back home and whipped Southern Cal 97-65 on Sunday. That's three straight games of scoring 90+ points for the Heels. Marvin Williams has shown up to campus and definitely been as good as advertised. And this squad would be even more lethal if J.R. Smith hadn't gone straight to the pros. If you recall, he was the kid from New Jersey who lit up last year's McDonald's All American game.

Auburn

I know this team is WAY OFF anyone's radar, but they've been a good story so far this season. The program got off track last season when the NCAA showed up inquiring about alleged cash offers that people associated with Auburn supposedly made to athletes who never even went to Auburn. The NCAA found no wrong doing beyond some technicalities, and the program lost one scholarship. But in the meantime, head coach Cliff Ellis was fired, and after Jeff Lebo was hired from UTC, the team's three best players transferred out (with Marco Killingsworth, the solid power forward, landing at Indiana), and the school's all-time shot block leader, center Kyle Davis, graduated.

What Lebo was left with was a team full of shooting guards, with nobody on the team being over 6'6" save for true freshman center Ryan Daniel, who is a 6'11" project at best. But the team is a surprising 4-0 so far, including a big upset in the season opener at Temple. True freshman phenom Toney Douglas is looking like an All-SEC performer, he's averaging 20 points a game and, despite being only 6'1", 8 rebounds a game. The team might not be able to sustain its success into the SEC schedule, but so far, this group has exceeded all expectations. Keep an eye on Douglas, he's the real deal.
